Gallup, NM –On July 31, 2022 at approximately 4:00 p.m., the New Mexico State Police conducted a safety cab inspection on a 2014 Freightliner Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) at the Gallup Port of Entry west of Gallup, NM. During the inspection, officers discovered 495 vacuumed sealed packages of Marijuana. The packages were concealed inside 20 Home Depot boxes in the trailer of the CMV. The total amount of Marijuana seized weighed 580 pounds.  

The driver, Binyam Habtamu Getahun (36) of Alexandria, VA and the co-driver, Mazemr Abebe Belayneh (64) of Snellville, GA were both arrested. They were booked into the McKinley County Detention Center without incident. Getahun and Belayneh were charged with the following: 

A native New Mexican, Col. Neil Richardson was born in Carlsbad and grew up in Santa Fe. He was commissioned in 1995 through New Mexico State University’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. The Department of the Air Force recently announced Richardson’s selection to the rank of Brigadier General, to be conferred during a ceremony in spring 2022.

The Las Cruces City Council has unanimously approved the sale of $17,600,000 in tax-exempt General Obligation (GO) Improvement Bonds, Series 2022 that City voters approved in 2018. The council’s approval came during Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, which was conducted by video conference.  The council also approved an increase in funding for the animal services center of more than a half-million dollars.  Here is a statement from the city:

The sale of the $17.6 million in GO bonds will be the second phase of bonds to be sold. In March 2022, $18 million were sold. City voters approved $35.6 million in General Obligation bonds in August 2018.

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials on Monday announced 117 additional COVID-19 cases.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A Santa Fe-based district attorney says his office will seek adult criminal sanctions against a 16-year-old defendant in the killing of a standout high school basketball player.

District Attorney Marco Serna said Monday that his office will file an open count of murder in children’s court and then request to move the case to state district court to pursue adult sanctions.

Hector S. Gonzalez, 29, is charged with one count of commercial burglary and one count of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. Both charges are fourth-degree felonies.

On the morning of Friday, July 31, Las Cruces police learned that Galeana Auto Sales, 2250 W. Picacho Ave., had been burglarized and that one of the vehicles, a 2007 Ford pickup, was stolen from the lot. Also taken in the burglary were keys to nine vehicles and a handful of titles, amongst other items.

As part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Camp-in-a-Box program, the two educators at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces created and distributed 800 summer camp kits, including more than 600 locally.
